“Most payment solutions aren't user-friendly. You need to have a deep understanding of payments to have any chance of using them.”
These aren’t my words. They’re the remarks of Lucas Quinio, the Head of Payments at French retail giant Conforama.
But I fundamentally agree with his statement.
While industries like design have democratized access with user-friendly tools like Canva and Figma, the payment space remains stuck in the dark ages.
This lack of progress is a massive oversight, one that’s ultimately preventing businesses from fully unlocking their payment potential.
If we take a step back, there is some logic behind the payments industry's lack of effort or focus on design and usability.
The payment industry's historical focus on technical challenges meant that usability wasn't a priority. Payment solutions were designed for IT teams to integrate, maintain, and generate reports, not for dedicated payment leads to use to drive strategy.
In this world, there wasn’t much, if any, incentive for payment vendors to focus on making payments accessible to anyone but the engineers responsible for these tasks.
But the landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade.
Today, business leaders understand the critical role payments play in strategy, revenue, and profitability. They’re appointing dedicated payment professionals to drive their payment strategy and vision, unleashing transformative potential within their organizations.
There is no doubt that these individuals are making a considerable impact, transforming how payments are used and viewed within their organization. But they also know they could be doing so much more. They have innovative ideas they want to implement, experiments they want to run, and plans to drive operational excellence in support of other teams.
Yet these payment leaders are held back, constrained by the engineering resources at their disposal.
Shirly Katzir Kalasy, Senior Payments and Risk Project Manager at AppsFlyer, recently discussed this challenge with us. “I am a team of one, reliant on our engineering team to execute my strategic plans. But with so much happening across the business, payments often had to take a back seat.”
This is where the old world built by payment vendors and the new world payment leaders are building collide.
It’s an issue that Primer is built to solve.
Primer is built for payment leaders. After a one-time integration by engineering, Payment Managers gain full control. They can add new services, create complex workflows, run experiments, and more—all without needing engineering resources.
It’s a level of autonomy that’s unprecedented.
Empowering payment leaders is just the beginning. We aim to dismantle silos, enabling all teams to leverage payments to achieve their goals.
Payments are often referred to as a "black box" and a space fraught with complexity. They’re not wrong. But we’re working hard to change that. Primer's Unified Payments Infrastructure, Workflows, Universal Checkout, and Observability products transform anyone interacting with payments into an expert.
And when we say anyone, we mean it.
Today, we have a team from payments, finance, operations, product, customer support, and engineering using Primer across the businesses we support. These teams are using Primer for a variety of use cases.
For example, at a leading online retail platform, the finance team used Primer to streamline their reporting process, reducing the time spent on reconciliation from days to minutes. Meanwhile, the customer support team is using Primer to develop a seamless VIP customer service experience, significantly boosting customer satisfaction.
No other platform caters to the needs of all these teams.
At Primer, we're not just evolving payment technology; we're transforming how merchants view payments.
Imagine a world where payments are the heartbeat of a business, strategically used by teams across the organization to optimize, innovate, and accelerate growth.
That's the future we're building at Primer.
